Transitions & Exit Interviews

The Importance of The Exit Interview

An exit interview provides an opportunity for a company to seek feedback about an employee's experience. Gathering information and feedback, can help companies identify areas for improvement and reduce future turnover.

Some ways to conduct an employee exit include:

- One-on-One Discussion/Meeting

- Survey

The Advantages of Conducting An Exit Interview:

1) Genuine Feedback - This gives employers the opportunity to ask questions about the former employee's experience.

2) Parting on good terms - Whether the departing employee is leaving because of their choice, or the departing employer, they still deserve respect and to leave on favorable terms.

3) Employment Wrap-Up. This includes turning in office material.

4) Opportunity for Q & A- Your departing employee might need assistance on HR issues like setting up COBRA, etc.

5) Private Venting - Departing Employees need to be heard and understood.

Exit Interviews Best Practices & Tips:

1) Schedule the meeting and communicate the purpose. An employee's last day is the ideal time to conduct the exit interview. The interview should take about 30 minutes to an hour.

2) Have the interview conducted by someone other than the departing employee's direct supervisor. This allows the opportunity to get honest, direct feedback.

3) Reinforce confidentiality to encourage openness.

4) Ask standard specific interview questions.

5) Support the former employee's new opportunity and encourage them on moving forward in their career.

6) Implement the feedback received from the exit interview. This is the most important tip of all.

HBTT will conduct training on the best practices to use for exit interviews, allowing for a meaningful exchange of ideas, experiences, insights and areas of improvement from departing employees. We can also conduct the exit interviews for you and gather information  confidentially as an impartial party.
